J.R Smith Might Crack the Starting Lineup. Will He? Should He?

Image

Raymond Felton, Carmelo Anthony, and Tyson Chandler will start for the Knicks this season. Beyond that, the rotation is quite unclear, but Knicks fans were given a bit of info on the situation Wednesday.

Knicks Coach Mike Woodson said Wednesday that there is an open competition between J.R Smith and Iman Shumpert for the starting Shooting Guard position. Smith had a great year last year, taking home the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award, but flamed out in the playoffs (during which he battled injury, suspension, and himself). Shumpert missed the first couple months of the season recovering from an ACL tear and struggled a bit once he got back, but finished the season strong and had a solid postseason after regaining his explosiveness. Both players are battling health issues: Smith had knee surgery during the offseason and is expected to at least miss most of the preseason, while Shumpert has said he felt a bit of knee soreness (which he says was to be expected) this summer following his comeback from the torn ACL.

Here’s what Coach Woodson had to say:

I’m going to let [Smith and Shumpert] fight it out… I want [Smith] to be past that Sixth Man. Let somebody else get the Sixth Man if he deserves to get that starting job. Last year was last year. Why not grant him that opportunity? That’s not to say he’s going to win it, but I’m not telling him he’s not going to start… [Starting] frees him up to maybe expand his game and be better for our ballclub. I don’t know, but we’ll see.

So who should start? Well, when both are healthy, Smith is clearly the better player (although Shumpert has great potential). However, putting Smith in the starting 5 instead of Shumpert could greatly hurt the defense Coach Woodson gets out of his first unit. Carmelo Anthony is a subpar defender due to a lack of effort, Raymond Felton is a defensive (albeit tenacious) defender at best, and Andrea Bargnani’s defense is atrocious unless his man is only a few feet away from the hoop (in which case it is actually very good, as stats have shown). And Tyson Chandler can’t do it all himself; taking Shumpert’s fantastic defense out of the starting lineup could be a huge mistake, even though Smith is decent on the defensive end.

Image

Another issue with starting Smith is his nature as a scorer. Carmelo Anthony is the main scorer in the first unit (as you may have heard), and the Knicks rely on Smith to give them a solid scoring punch when the second unit takes the floor. Putting Smith in the starting lineup would hurt the offense of the second unit. But starting Smith would increase the offensive production from the first unit, negating the negative impact on the second unit, right? Wrong.

Again, Carmelo is the primary scorer whenever he is on the floor. So when Carmelo is on the floor, this means 2 things.

  1. Anthony will have the ball
  2. Anthony’s teammates will not have the ball

You probably just nodded while reading those 2 things. If you happen to be Amar’e Stoudemire, you may have even let out a sigh. When Melo is on the floor, Melo is going to shoot, something which he has earned the right to do by establishing himself as one of the game’s premier scorers. But if J.R and Melo spend more time on the court together, it means that J.R Smith will spend more time doing what Iman Shumpert did last season: standing on the floor without the ball. Iman Shumpert is a much better off-ball player than Smith due to his unselfishness, athleticism, and most important his fantastic defense. J.R needs the ball to have a big impact on the game. Iman Shumpert does not. Therefore, I believe that Iman Shumpert is better suited for the Melo-led first unit, J.R is better suited to lead the second unit, and Coach Woodson would be wise to keep these things in mind.

Image

But who will start? Again, I say Shumpert. For one, Smith’s injury problems are larger than Shumpert’s right now. In addition, Smith will already miss the first 5 games of the season regardless of the state of his knees due to his suspension for violating the league’s recreational drug use policy. And most importantly, Shumpert started last year, and Coach Woodson is not a man who likes to change the way he does things. It is important to note that both players have indicated that they will be happy in either role, so hopefully team chemistry will not be affected by this competition.

Of course, there’s a chance that neither player starts if Coach Woodson goes back to those two-point-guard lineups. Pablo Prigioni, anyone?

Knicks Will Have Toure Murry In Training Camp After PG Turns Down Miami’s Offer

Image

The Miami Heat made a strong push for Toure Murry, but the D-League Stud and Summer League  Standout will be joining the New York Knicks in training camp in an attempt to win a roster spot. Murry looked very good in Vegas, and has produced throughout his career (at the lower levels), but has an uphill battle ahead of him as the Knicks already have several guards under contract. One person Murry will be competing with is Chris Smith, who signed with the Knicks on a non-guaranteed contract with a training camp invite this week. Murry also has to compete with free agent guards such as Rip Hamilton (who the Knicks might have interest in). And of course, Murry also needs to compete with bigger players, because the Knicks only have one roster spot left and definitely need more depth in the frontcourt. It’s always nice to keep somebody away from the Heat, and Murry has promise, but whether he makes the team remains to be seen

New York Knicks Memes Exclusive: Interview With Metta World Peace’s Brother, Daniel Artest

Tommy Rothman

Earlier this week, I reached out to Metta World Peace’s brother Daniel Artest, asking if I could ask him a few questions, and he kindly agreed. Daniel Artest is a former basketball player himself, having played some college and semi-pro ball until 2012. Born 3 years to the day after his  eccentric All-Star brother, Artest is certainly an outspoken character himself. But he is definitely down to earth. As Daniel puts it in his twitter bio, he is “just a man with an unlimited iPhone data plan and an opinion.” After doing this interview, I can conclude that the two apples fell approximately 3 inches from each other. Here is what Daniel Artest had to say in his interview with New York Knicks Memes.

Tommy, New York Knicks Memes: Hi, Mr. Artest. Thanks for agreeing to do this interview with New York Knicks Memes. Let’s start with the name. Your brother recently changed his name from “Ron Artest” to “Metta World Peace”. Was it just for fun? Does he expect his family members to refer to him as “Metta”?  Does he expect people who work for him to refer to him as “Mr. World Peace”?

Daniel Artest, Metta’s Brother: He doesn’t mind being called “Ron” in public. I call him “Ron”. People who work for him calls him “Metta”. I guess it depends on the person.

Tommy: Growing up with “Ron”, one of the most outgoing guys in the league, what was that like?

Artest: Growing up with Ron was just your average brother relationship but we rarely got into disagreements. I just followed him to his basketball games back then. He had a name hooping and I looked up to that. Even to this day I look up to my brother.

Tommy: As we know, you played a bit of ball yourself. How close were your pickup games with Ron? Did you ever win?

Artest: Ron was physical but we both can say I was the more physical one. I won my fair share of games. I was really good at basketball before I got hurt. I can still play now. Just can’t jump as high.

Tommy: Was he as physical in the backyard as he is on the NBA court?

Artest: We are from Queensbridge. We had no backyard man. We hood!!!

Tommy: You guys were all born in New York, and Ron grew up a Knicks fan. Emotionally, what was the experience like for him and for the family when the Knicks passed on him in the 1999 NBA Draft, one pick before he was taken by Chicago?

Artest: I was 16 years old at the time. I wasn’t thinking about what team he got picked up by. We as a family was just happy he was in that fortunate position to live his dream.

Tommy: Things did work out in the end. Ron is a Knick now. Did you all see this coming once he was let go by the Lakers? What does it mean for Ron and the family for him to be playing his home games a subway ride away from where he grew up as a kid? Other than location, what were the other factors in his decision to join the Knicks?

Artest: I honestly thought the Clippers was the team he was going to end up with. Me personally as a Spurs fan… I tried and failed to get him to San Antonio. I guess the NYC factor was the main factor. And he wants to [beat] Miami to get that title.

Screen Shot 2013-08-10 at 8.54.10 PM

Tommy: Going back to the earlier days of his career, Ron let his explosive nature get the best of him at times, most notably on November 19, 2004. How much of a setback was the brawl for Ron… how tough was it for him to overcome the consequences of his actions that night?

Artest: I figured you was going to ask about the brawl. I praised Ron for his actions. At the end of the day. NBA or not… You are human. If you threw something in my face… I’m sure I’d react the same way. People, especially media, makes it seem like just because you make millions you’re supposed to deal with actions of jerk fans like John Green. I bet if I threw juice in David Stern face… He would probably attack me too. I’d beat his ass though. [Laughs]

Tommy: It is clear that Ron has changed since he jumped into the stands. Aside from one incident a couple years ago, he has learned to harness his energy and toughness and use them to become a dominant defensive player in the NBA, while keeping his emotions under control. What did Ron have to do to turn things around?

Artest: I’m proud of his change, but I miss the edge he played with. Not saying he’s soft now… But players aren’t as scared as they used to be. I want that Ron back.

Tommy: Ron finally won an NBA championship in 2010 with the Lakers… he even hit the series-clinching shot. Obviously, winning a title is the main goal for any athlete. What did it mean for you when your brother became an NBA champion?

Artest: It was cool. As a fan you are happy when your team win a championship but to experience it firsthand and being around Ron during the ups and downs… I was overcome with emotion. I’m glad he can say he’s a champion.

Tommy: What do you see Ron doing for the Knicks this season? Obviously, his prime years are a bit behind him, but he has shown that he can still be a very impactful player, especially on defense. What do you see his role being on the team? What do you see the Knicks as a whole doing this season?

Artest: Ron will do the little things that makes a big difference. He may not score 20-30 points no more but y’all Knicks fans will understand his left hand. I won’t explain it. You’ll have to see for yourself.

Tommy: What is the craziest Ron story you have that you think you are allowed to tell us?

Artest: I wasn’t cleared to tell that story. [Laughs]. But other than that. Ron really didn’t have crazy moments. That’s just media blowing things up.

Tommy: Thank you for your time, Mr. Artest.

BREAKING: Knicks Sign Jeremy Tyler

Image

ESPN sources are reporting that the Knicks have agreed to a contract with big man Jeremy Tyler. Tyler, 22, showed his extreme athleticism during the Summer League games and definitely deserves this roster spot. Tyler is raw, but can defend and rebound very well and is developing on the offensive end. With Bobby Brown flying to NYC to meet with the Knicks, and Tyler’s ink finally drying on a contract, it appears that the Knicks pretty much have their roster filled out. -Tommy Rothman
