Cross a big 2015 Free Agent target off the Knicks’ list, and pencil in the Cavaliers as the owners of the new “Big 3” to beat in their conference. Cleveland has reportedly agreed to ship No. 1 pick Andrew Wiggins, last year’s No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett, and their 2015 1st round pick to the Minnesota TImberwolves for superstar Kevin Love. Love will reportedly commit to a 5-year, $120 million contract extension as part of the deal. Yahoo was first to report the news.

BREAKING: Knicks sign Jason Smith with MLE

jason smith

The Knicks have used their $3.27 million Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception on big man Jason Smith. Smith, 28, played for the New Orleans Pelicans last season and averaged 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 block in 27 minutes per game. The 7-foot, 240 pound Smith is one of the game’s top mid-range shooters and a capable team defender, help defender, and shot-blocker (although he can be beaten in 1-on-1 situations). Smith is also a 78% shooter from the line.

Smith was the Pelicans’ starting center until he went down with a knee injury in January. He has a chance to get some big minutes on this Knicks team, but he will likely have to compete with Amar’e Stoudemire, Andrea Bargnani, Samuel Dalembert, Jeremy Tyler, and Cole Aldrich. This signing likely spells the end for Kenyon Martin’s time in New York.

Smith should fit well in the Triangle Offense, in which bigs who can shoot fare far better than your typical slow, lumbering, mass-cultivators. With Smith, Bargnani, and Stoudemire, the Knicks have 3 bigs who can shoot the mid-range jumper. Smith is by far the best defender of the 3, although less of an offensive threat all-around than Bargs and STAT.

The Knicks had been reluctant to use their MLE because they often end up being multi-year deals, but New York was able to land Smith on a 1-year deal which will not eat into next summer’s cap space.

RealGM was first to report.

Raymond Felton to avoid jail time after reaching plea deal

Image

Knicks point guard Raymond Felton has reached a plea deal that will keep him out of prison after he was faced with weapons charges. Felton faced a maximum of 7 years in prison, but instead will be required to complete 500 hours of community service, pay a $5,000 fine, register as a gun offender, waive his right as a defendant to appeal the case, and plead guilty to at least one felony gun charge.

Felton had a dreadful season both on and off the court, and the Knicks are reportedly looking to trade him. Regardless of where he plays next season, he will look to bounce back from what was without a question the low point of his career so far.

BREAKING: Bynum Traded to Bulls for Deng… Could the Knicks be Next?

Image

Andrew Bynum has been traded along with three picks for Bulls star Luol Deng. The Bulls are expected to waive Bynum within the next day to save over $20 million, and ESPN is reporting that the Knicks, Clippers, and Heat are among the teams expected to consider offering Bynum a roster spot. Bynum has had his struggles health-wise and, most recently, behaviorally, but the Knicks are in need of help on the interior. Would you welcome Bynum to the Knicks? Leave your thoughts in the comments! -Tommy

BREAKING: JR Smith Suspended 5 games for Recreational Drug Use

Image

Well, we all saw it coming, right?

In the least surprising breaking story of all time, JR Smith has been suspended for failing THREE drug tests for recreational substances such as Marijuana. Smith’s was already in danger of missing the first few weeks of the season with a knee injury. His suspension will begin the first game he is physically able to play, so if he is ready to come back 2 weeks after opening day, he will have to wait an extra 5 games after that.

The Knicks recently gave Smith a new contract, and he has wasted no time in showing why the Knicks were able to get such a bargain on the mercurial Smith. One person who is not happy? The fictional Mike Woodson twitter account

This is another frustrating off-court setback for J.R, who has had disciplinary issues through his career.

Knicks Will Have Toure Murry In Training Camp After PG Turns Down Miami’s Offer

Image

The Miami Heat made a strong push for Toure Murry, but the D-League Stud and Summer League  Standout will be joining the New York Knicks in training camp in an attempt to win a roster spot. Murry looked very good in Vegas, and has produced throughout his career (at the lower levels), but has an uphill battle ahead of him as the Knicks already have several guards under contract. One person Murry will be competing with is Chris Smith, who signed with the Knicks on a non-guaranteed contract with a training camp invite this week. Murry also has to compete with free agent guards such as Rip Hamilton (who the Knicks might have interest in). And of course, Murry also needs to compete with bigger players, because the Knicks only have one roster spot left and definitely need more depth in the frontcourt. It’s always nice to keep somebody away from the Heat, and Murry has promise, but whether he makes the team remains to be seen

Tracy McGrady Retires From NBA

Image

Tracy McGrady has announced his retirement from the NBA. While T-Mac’s best days came in Orlando and Houston, Knicks fans will remember him for a fun 2-month stretch during which he brought excitement to the Garden (sound familiar?) after coming over in a trade with the Rockets during “The Dark Days”. McGrady had a great career, but it’s hard not to wonder what could have been if he had stayed healthy.
