BREAKING: Raymond Felton Arrested on Weapons Charges

Image

A tough season for Raymond Felton just got worse. Felton has struggled all year and the Knicks were actively trying to dump his contract before the trade deadline. Last week, it was reported that Felton’s wife has filed for a divorce. Now, Felton is in serious trouble with the law.

Felton was arrested this morning on on three counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Two of the charges, second and third degree possession of a firearm, are felonies. The other, fourth degree possession, is a misdemeanor. According to a spokesman, the charges do not stem from him using the firearm, just from possessing one. Felton is expected to appear in criminal court today. Let’s see how this plays out…

BREAKING: Knicks Release World Peace, Udrih

Image

The Knicks announced that they have waived Metta World Peace and Beno Udrih. Both players had expressed displeasure with the team recently, and with the trade deadline in the rearview mirror, it makes sense to cut the two players, since, for whatever reason, the Knicks were set on never playing either of them.

The team now has two open roster spots. Chris Smith, anybody? Just kidding. I hope.

Knicks to Buy Out Metta World Peace After Veteran Asks for Release

Image

Knicks’ forward Metta World Peace has asked the team for a buyout that would make him a free agent. World Peace informed fans of his decision in a tweet, saying:

Thank NYC for everything. Thanks for having me I will always be grateful… My agent is working on a buyout. No disrespect to the city Luv U

The team plans to honor his Metta’s request. World Peace had been seeing very little playing time, and the team has not been successful at all, so this is not much of a surprise, although it is a bit disappointing. Oh well…

Baffling, Infuriating Mike Woodson-Related Fact Of The Day

Image

According to Wall Street Journal Reporter Chris Herring, the Knicks’ starting lineup (Felton, Prigioni, Shumpert, Anthony, Chandler) has the highest +/- per 36 minutes in the NBA.

What does that mean? It means that, if you adjust the numbers to account for playing time to make it a fair comparison, the Knicks’ starting lineup has been the most effective in the league.

You read that right. It looks like the key to winning more games isn’t some ultra-complicated scheme, or to come up with some crazy, creative lineup combination.

It’s to let the starters play more.

Now excuse me while I go punch a wall, Andy Bernard style.

Melo Speaks About His Future and The Future of The Team

Image

Speaking Friday to the media gathered in New Orleans for All-Star Weekend, Carmelo Anthony basically said the following.

  • His first choice is to remain in New York for the rest of his career.
  • He is willing to take less money to help the Knicks with the cap going forward, but only if he likes the plans they set out in front of him.
  • He will be meeting with the Knicks’ Front Office soon to discuss roster plans going forward.
  • Mike Woodson will be at practice Monday in Memphis.
  • He knows he will not be traded before Thursday’s Trade Deadline.

Given that Melo seemingly calls a lot of the shots, this is a very telling series of statements.

It’s Not Mike Woodson’s Fault… But It’s Time for Him to Go

The Knicks’ Coach is a Dead Man Walking

Image

By Tommy Rothman

Two seasons ago, former Knicks Coach Mike D’antoni found his team inexplicably on the outside of the playoff picture midway through the season. The players had, for the most part, begun to tune him out. The team had talent, but wasn’t playing hard, or smart, or well. If not for a few timely wins every time it seemed that a coaching change was one loss away, and the emergence of a certain point guard who rose from the end of the bench and became the supreme ruler of the universe for a month, D’antoni would have surely been fired well before the All-Star Break.

Image

Mike Woodson, who took over when D’antoni finally “resigned” on March 14th, now finds himself in an eerily similar situation. Woodson wasn’t a big-name coach, and his schemes weren’t especially creative. But he represented a change, something which was desperately needed in New York. The Knicks responded positively, as they won Woodson’s first six games as coach. Woodson’s team finished 18-6 and managed to win their first playoff game in years before falling to the Heat.

Image

But now, the Knicks need a change again. The players have tuned out Coach Woodson, his team is losing at an unacceptable rate, the fans have started calling for his removal, and he would have been gone by now if not for a couple short winning streaks. Sports Illustrated reported a couple days ago that Woodson expects to be fired before the All-Star Break. A blowout win Friday against the Nuggets may have bought Woodson a bit more time, but everybody, from the fans, to the players, to the coach himself, knows that Woodson is a lame duck. The front office needs to stop stalling and make the change that more and more people believe (and hope) is on the way.

Image

Is Woodson being made into something of a scapegoat? Perhaps. The Knicks’ struggles are not his fault. Well, they’re not all his fault. He didn’t break Tyson Chandler’s leg, for example. The Knicks have struggled at times to make open shots, their players have not stayed healthy, and aside from Carmelo Anthony, Woodson’s players have been maddeningly inconsistent. But Woodson has had a bad year on the sidelines; he  recently said so himself. His rotations are baffling, his clock management has been dreadful at times, his offensive systems don’t work, and his reputation as a defensive-minded coach has been shattered by the fact that his team hasn’t been able to stop a nosebleed.

Image

The Knicks don’t play with focus or energy. Some coaches are wizards with the clipboard. Some coaches build  reputations as motivators. Mike Woodson is neither. He is a decent coach, but nothing more. And if a coach doesn’t bring out the best in his players (or anything even close), he has no business being the coach. Mike Woodson has become what Mike D’antoni once was. And the Knicks would be best served giving Herb Williams, Jim Todd, or another readily available candidate a chance to bring the change and the spark the team needs to salvage its season before pursuing a top-flight coach this summer.
