Could the Knicks do this Trade?

I was playing around with the Trade Machine and cooked up this deal. Check out the trade (click the image to enlarge), then read the explanation

Houston and Dallas are both chasing Howard/Paul and need every bit of cap space they can get. But the Rockets have a lot of cap-clearing to do to make that happen; ESPN has reported that the Rockets would consider trading Lin/Asik to get the necessary cap room. In this deal, the Rockets save 5 million. They also escape the poison pill in Lin/Asik’s third year.
In this deal, Dallas saves 1.7 Million. They are VERY close to Paul/Howard-territory in terms of the cap, so that 1.7 M is a big deal to them.
Sacramento gets 2 young assets for free, a mentor for Cousins, and White (for what it’s worth). They would also probably get a 2nd rounder from Dallas, who doesn’t want the cap hit that comes with a 2nd round pick.
The Knicks get a big man who can rebound (Asik). We get a decent guard who can shoot (Delfino). Outlaw has SOME versatility and could help a bit. Cunningham is irrelevant, he is only here because Dallas wants to dump his salary. In exchange for taking on Asik’s pill, we might even be able to get Houston’s second rounder (34), and that helps Houston escape a cap hit. It is a fantastic deal for Dallas, a good deal for the Knicks (although i’d like to keep Novak), a good deal for Houston if they are serious about CP3/D12, and an OK deal for the Kings. And with any luck, Maybe Dallas swaps picks with us to help this deal go through, saving them money and moving us up 11 spots in the 1st round (Shabazz, anyone?).

And if this is too complicated, Dallas would probably give us a pick if we found a way to take Marion in a trade

Can the Knicks come back?

By Tommy Rothman

For the first time this season, the Knicks are playing a must-win game. A real must-win game. If the Knicks lose on Thursday, they won’t have another game until November, and only Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Steve Novak, Iman Shumpert, Amar’e Stoudemire, and Marcus Camby are locks to be on the roster next year. With so much on the line for now and so much in question for the future, Thursday’s game 5 is a game the Knicks must win at all costs. The same holds true for game 6 and game 7 (if necessary). 9 NBA teams have come back from a 3-1 deficit. Can the Knicks make it 10? Is New York still alive?

Here is my breakdown of game 5, game 6, and game 7.

NOTE: Obviously, my analysis for game 6 is based on the assumption that the Knicks have won game 5, and my analysis for game 7 is based on the fact that New York has also won game 6.

Game 5:

The first thing the Knicks need to do is win game 5 at home. The odds favor New York as the game will be played in the Garden, but as we learned in game 1, nothing is guaranteed. The Knicks must feed off of the crowd, hustle a bit more, and get a few more shots to fall in order to take care of business at home and keep their season alive. I give them about a 70% chance of winning this one.

Game 6:

Game 6 is where many expect the Knicks to meet their end. New York will have to beat Indy on the road, something they have not done all year. Indy is 4-0 at home in the playoffs, and the Knicks looked listless for part of game 3 and almost all of game 4 at the Fieldhouse. After winning game 5 (see NOTE), the Knicks will have some momentum and confidence, and will be playing with the knowledge that all they need is one win to force a game 7 in a packed Garden. At this point, the pressure will be on the Pacers. Indy is a young team that has been prone to blowing leads all year. At times, they have appeared easily rattled. Can the veteran Knicks capitalize on this? That will be the key. To win, of course, New York will need improved shot-making and a bit of an improvement on the glass. They can’t get sucked into the somewhat muted Indiana atmosphere and become completely listless like they did in game 4. I think the Knicks have a 35% chance of winning here.

Game 7:

After winning games 5 and 6 (see NOTE), the Knicks will have earned the right to host a winner-take-all game 7 at the Garden. All the pressure will be on Indiana. If it gets to a game 7, as long as the Knicks don’t get complacent after winning games 5 and 6 (which, it pains me to say, is possible based on our roster’s history), they should be able to take care of business in game 7. I’d give them an 80% chance of winning this game.

The Knicks are the better team, and their matchup with Indy isn’t too bad. If they can get back the home-court advantage they so foolishly squandered in game 1, they should be able to take the series. Game 5 seems like a very winnable game, but it will by no means be easy. The Knicks need to take care of business Thursday, then move on to game 6. Game 6 is where their season will most likely end, but if they can pull out a win there (and i think they can), then we will have the upper hand going into game 7. The Nets came back from 3-1 down to force a game 7. Why don’t we one-up them?

Tommy’s Keys to the Game: Pacers at Knicks, G2, ECSF

 By Tommy Rothman

The Knicks face Indiana tonight at the Garden in what is almost a must-win for New York, who dropped the first game of the series. The Knicks have never won a playoff series after losing game 1 at home, so they have an uphill battle in front of them. What do the Knicks need to do in order to even the series?

  • Leave it all on the floor. The Knicks don’t play again until Saturday, meaning they have no excuse to not go hard for 48 minutes tonight. They must play hard throughout the game, no matter the score.
  • Keep Melo on the court. The Knicks actually outscored the Pacers Sunday when Carmelo was on the floor. So why did they lose? Anthony was in foul trouble all game. The Knicks have to back him up on Defense so he can stay out of foul trouble without David West scoring 30. On the offensive end, Melo needs to keep his elbows to himself… when the ref is looking.
  • Keep their composure. The refs will be bad. Joey Crawford is working the game tonight. The Knicks need to play until the whistle, and react to the way the game is being called. If the Knicks are letting them play, be physical. If they are calling it tight, back off.
  • Hit their shots. This seems simplistic, but we cannot win if we shoot as badly as we did Sunday. Melo and JR must show up.
  • Stop Roy Hibbert! Tyson Chandler was terrible Sunday. He needs to defend and box out, and maybe give us something on offense, too.
  • Attack. The Pick&Roll has been great for the Knicks, and Melo is one of the best finishers in the game. Run the P&R, have Melo drive, and post him up on occasion. Force the issue. Don’t be afraid of Roy Hibbert.

If the Knicks do all this, we should be able to even the series before heading to Indiana for games 3 and 4. If not, they will be well on their way to an early vacation.

BREAKING: NBA SUSPENDS SMITH, AND MORE COULD BE ON THE WAY

Smith Suspended 1 Game, and Could Miss Future Games as Well.

                                                            By Tommy Rothman

                   Image

Knicks Sixth Man J.R. Smith has been suspended 1 game for elbowing Jason Terry in game 3 of the Knicks-Celtics first round series. In addition to this suspension, Smith is in danger of future suspensions. There are 2 types of flagrant fouls: Flagrant 1 and Flagrant 2. A Flagrant 1 (unnecessary contact) earns a player 1 “Flagrant point”, while a Flagrant 2 (unnecessary and excessive contact) earns a player 2 “Flagrant points”. Smith was assessed a Flagrant 2 in last night’s game. After he serves his 1 game suspension during Sunday’s game 4, Smith could get suspended again, because Smith has 2 Flagrant points during the playoffs, and any player who gets 4 or more during one postseason receives an automatic suspension. Here are the NBA playoff Flagrant Foul suspension rules.

Player at 2 points commits a FFP2: automatic one-game suspension

Player at 3 or 4 points commits a FFP1: automatic one-game suspension

Player at 3 or 4 points commits a FFP2: automatic two-game suspension

Player at 5 points or more commits a FFP1 or FFP2: automatic two-game suspension

NBA Playoff Preview

NBA PLAYOFF PREVIEW 2013

Only the strong will survive. Who will come out on top?

By Tommy Rothman

Image

The NBA playoffs are upon us, with some familiar faces at the top of the bracket, with some surprises mixed into the lower half. Most of these teams were expected to be here, albeit in different seeds than those in which they wound up. The 16 remaining teams will each be seeking the 16 wins necessary to capture the NBA crown. While squad will emerge victorious in 2013?

PREDICTIONS

(Higher seed has home-court advantage)

Eastern Conference Quarterfinals

#1 Miami Heat vs. #8 Milwaukee Bucks (Miami won season series 3-1)

Could you imagine what it would be like if the 8-seeded Bucks stunned the top-seeded Heat in a thrilling 7 game first-round series, shocking the world and sending the best player of his generation home 2 months early? No? Neither can I. Heat in 4.

#2 New York Knicks vs. #7 Boston Celtics (NY won SS 3-1)

This series will be hard fought. Boston will be a motivated team, but without Rajon Rondo, they are not a very good team. I expect Boston to steal a couple games, but I don’t think Boston has any particular strength with which they can exploit the Knicks’ defense. Knicks in 6.

#3 Indiana Pacers vs. #6 Atlanta Hawks (SS tied 2-2)

Indiana lost one of their best players early in the season, but they have thrived without Danny Granger thanks to a stifling defense and the emergence of Paul George. On the other side of the matchup, Atlanta has played well after trading star player Joe Johnson in July, but they now lack the go-to scorer they will need in the playoffs. I don’t think Atlanta can solve Indiana’s defense— at least not 4 times. Pacers in 6.

#4 Brooklyn Nets vs. #5 Chicago Bulls (CHI won SS 3-1)

Chicago is scary for a 5 seed, but Rose will not return this season, and Joakim Noah has been battling a foot injury. Because of this, the Bulls are not as dangerous as they have been in years past. But they have still found a way to win, and I think that continues in this series. The Nets are a good team, with a big 3 of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, and Brook Lopez. But I think the Bulls win this series, although it could go either way. Bulls in 7.

Western Conference Quarterfinals

#1 Oklahoma City Thunder vs. #8 Houston Rockets (OKC won SS 2-1)

Houston has been a fun team to watch, and the Harden-Thunder matchup will be exciting, but Houston isn’t good enough to beat OKC. Linsanity is not making it out of the first round. Thunder in 5.

#2 San Antonio Spurs vs. #7 Los Angeles Lakers (SAS won SS 2-1)

If Kobe had not gotten hurt, I would be picking LA here. San Antonio has been beatable lately with Ginobili out and Parker slumping a bit. But without Kobe (and possibly Nash), the Lakers can’t win a playoff series. Spurs in 6.

#3 Denver Nuggets vs. #6 Golden State Warriors (DEN won SS 3-1)

The Nuggets were the team nobody wanted to face— and then the injuries came. Danilo Gallinari tore his ACL, and Ty Lawson and Kenneth Faried are banged up. The Warriors were a great surprise this season, as Stephen Curry’s rise to stardom propelled them into the playoffs. This will be the most entertaining series of the first round. I think Denver’s quickness will give them the edge in transition, and in the series. Denver in 6.

#4 Los Angeles Clippers vs. #5 Memphis Grizzlies (LAC won SS 3-1)

Both of these teams cooled off after very hot starts to the season. Griffin-Randoplh will be a matchup to watch. But I think Memphis threw away their season when they traded Rudy Gay— this is not a team that is sending Chris Paul home early. Clippers in 5.

Eastern Conference Semifinals

#1 Miami Heat vs. #5 Chicago Bulls (SS tied 2-2)

Miami will face the team that ended their 27 game win streak, with the knowledge that this is not a Bulls team that can be underestimated. If Noah is healthy, the Bulls can win. But without Rose, I think LeBron prevails. Heat in 6

#2 New York Knicks vs. #3 Indiana Pacers (SS tied 2-2)

The Pacers are a physical team, giving them a chance against the Knicks. But their performance in the season series (one of their wins came with Melo out, and the Knicks beat them in April without Tyson Chandler) suggests that the Knicks have a bit of an edge. The Pacers lack the quickness at the guard position to exploit the Knicks, and Melo should give them fits on the other end. Knicks in 5.

Western Conference Semifinals

#1 Oklahoma City Thunder vs. #4 Los Angeles Clippers (OKC won SS 3-0)

These are probably the 2 best teams in the West right now, meaning this series will have higher stakes than your average Conference Semifinal. The point guard matchup will be a must-watch, and the deep benches on both sides will provide for a very close series. The Clippers’ leading scorer is Blake Griffin. OKC’s leading scorer is Kevin Durant. I think that makes the difference in a very close matchup.

Thunder in 6.

#2 San Antonio Spurs vs. #3 Denver Nuggets (SS tied 2-2)

I like the youth, athleticism, and depth of Denver in this matchup. The Spurs have home-field advantage and could get Ginobili back, but I think Denver has a matchup edge in this series. Denver in 5.

Eastern Conference Finals

#1 Miami Heat vs. #2 New York Knicks (NYK won SS 3-1)

The Knicks won the season series and match up very well with the Heat. If the Knicks hit their threes, this is definitely a series they can win. The Knicks can definitely beat the Heat. But the operative word in each of my last two sentences is “can”. I think this series is going 7 games, and game 7 is in Miami. I think that LeBron, like he did last year, will take over in an elimination game. This could go either way, but I’m taking the Heat. Heat in 7.

Western Conference Finals

#1 Oklahoma City Thunder vs. #3 Denver Nuggets (Denver won SS 3-1)

If the Nuggets were healthy, I might actually go with Denver in this one. But with some players out and other players banged up, the Nuggets’ depth is not as scary. I don’t think they have the defense necessary to stop Durant and Westbrook, and OKC’s home field advantage is a huge edge when you consider how rabid their fans are. Thunder in 6.

NBA FINALS

#1 Miami Heat vs. #1 Oklahoma City Thunder (Miami won SS 2-0)

This rematch of last year’s finals should be closer, as the young duo of Thunder stars has had another year to develop. Miami wins the small forward matchup, the guard matchup goes to OKC, and I think the 2 power forwards are about even. But one thing worries me: I don’t think Westbrook has shown he can handle the stage he will be on. I think that brings Wade and Westbrook even, and I think LeBron will take over when it gets close near the end. Heat in 7.

I have Miami winning the title, but I could also see them losing as early a round 3, or even round 2. This postseason will be exciting and unpredictable. Let’s see what happens.
