Knicks Memes Interview with “Friday Night Knicks Guy” Robert Randolph

By Tommy Rothman

Robert Randolph is the leader of Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and was named as one of the “Greatest 100 Guitarists of All-Time” by Rolling Stone. Randolph is also a celebrity amongst Knicks fans. Randolph is a die-hard Knicks fan himself and has risen to fame in the Knicks community as the “Friday Night Knicks Guy” over the last few years. Every Friday Night on which there is a Knicks game televised on MSG, Randolph performs a game-tailored version of his song “Get There” (video above). While the song and the video are a nice, catchy part of the broadcast, Randolph has come under fire in the past due to allegations of him being a “curse”. Entering last season, the Knicks had had a losing record on Fridays for several years in a row, and every year since Randolph had joined the broadcast. Randolph promised he would do something about the curse, and he delivered; the Knicks went 10-6 on Fridays this past season. Earlier this week, I contacted  Randolph asking him if he would be interested in doing an online interview, and he kindly accepted. Here is what he had to say on the team, his career, the curse, and more:

Tommy (New York Knicks Memes): How did you get started in music? What made you decide you wanted to be a musician?

Robert Randolph (Family Band, Friday Night Knicks): I grew up in New Jersey playing music in church and in public schools, that’s where I had a chance to see and get involved in music.

Tommy: Aside from your business relationship with the Knicks, what is your backstory as a Knicks fan?

Randolph: I was born a Knicks fan, my father talked about Clyde Frazier and Willis Reed growing up. But I became a die-hard Knicks fan when Patrick Ewing and Mark Jackson got drafted. Mark Jackson was my favorite player growing up.

Tommy: How did “Friday Night Knicks” get started? Did you contact the Knicks or did they reach out to you?

Randolph: I have many fans that work for MSG, they used to come to a lot of my early shows without me knowing. In 2003, I met an employee named Sammy Steinlight, who had an idea when the Knicks were doing very [badly] in 06, 07 to create some sense of hope for Knicks fans. But apparently everyone started calling me “The Jinx”. [Laugh]

nite

Tommy: What is it like to be a part of the broadcast for the team you rooted for as a child?

Randolph: I love every minute of being part of the Knicks’ MSG family. I still get goose bumps every time I walk in the Garden.

Tommy: What is the strangest thing that has happened to you since you became “The Friday Night Knicks Guy” (aside from me asking you for this interview, of course)?

Randolph: Strangest thing [that] happens is when people who never bought any of my records or haven’t been to any of my live shows know me for just ” Friday Night Knicks.” [Laugh]

rrt

Tommy: Do you think the Knicks will be able to play with the toughness they relied on in the late 90’s now that Kenyon Martin, Metta World Peace, Tyson Chandler, JR Smith, and others are all on board?

Randolph: The 90’s Knicks were the toughest team ever. Mason, Starks, Derek Harper, Oakley… even Xman McDaniel was a badass!! But these Knicks are a much more exciting team to watch and everyone is seriously underestimating how good [Andrea Bargnani] is!

Tommy: Focusing back on your career as a successful musician, what advice do you have for the several fans of our page who are trying to break into the industry as singers and rappers?

Randolph: Fans should just follow their passion and be themselves. Too many singers and rappers try to be like some folks they see on TV, and never get a chance to grow into the talents God has given them!

Tommy: How do you feel about the state of the Knicks right now, both short-term and long-term?

Randolph: The state of the Knicks right now is all positive. We’ve added all the necessary pieces. I’m concerned about Tyson Chandler’s offensive inability to score, and Amar’e’s knees are a big concern, but Grunwald has provided insurance for both these scenarios. The Knicks will once again win the Atlantic and [they will] proceed to the Eastern Conference Finals this upcoming season!

Tommy: Would you ever consider featuring Knicks guard & rapper Iman Shumpert on a song, now that our other rapper—Steve Novak— has been traded to the Raptors?

Randolph: I would definitely do a hot song with Iman Shumpert! He is talented and everyone is raving about his skills.

Tommy: And now, the question that Knicks fans have all been waiting for. Before this season, the Knicks had never had a winning record on Fridays since you started the job. Many fans started talking about “The Friday Night Knicks Curse”. However, the Knicks went 10-6 on Fridays this past season. How did you improve your game to make this happen? Is the weight of the Knicks community finally off your shoulders?

Randolph: The reason the Knicks were losing, not only on Friday nights but all the time, was because of the sorry coach we had in [Former Knicks’ and current Lakers’ Coach Mike] D’antoni, he has an ego problem. He damaged the careers of Marbury, Eddy Curry and others, tried to do the same thing to Nate Robinson, who we see rose above all of that. And Pau Gasol now that [D’antoni] is on the Lakers… D’antoni should no longer coach NBA basketball

—— End of Interview —–

Randolph seems to have doubts about the true nature of the curse now that it has seemingly been broken. He also seems optimistic about the team. You can follow Randolph here, and buy his latest album “Lickety Split“, which is in stores now.

Knicks Free Agency: The Confusing Case of Kenyon Martin

By Tommy Rothman

Image

Kenyon is confused. So are we.

Kenyon Martin was a key player for the Knicks down the stretch. K-Mart provided defense, rebounding, toughness, and even a bit of scoring here and there. Martin played valuable minutes for the team down the stretch and during the playoffs. Martin is a free agent.

Why? Why is Martin still a free agent? The answer remains unclear. From all indications, there is mutual interest between the two sides. Iman Shumpert told reporters that Martin was interested in returning, Knicks GM Glen Grunwald told reporters that Martin is a priority and is getting full consideration from the team, and Head Coach Mike Woodson expressed interest in having Martin back on the team next year as well. Quotes from Kenyon himself make it seem like he wants to return. The day after the Knicks were eliminated, Martin was asked by a reporter what he though was the first thing the Knicks should do this offseason. Kenyon quickly responded “Sign Kenyon Martin”.

It seems like the Knicks want to do just that. Martin is valuable to the team and is a fan-favorite in New York. At this point, money should not be much of a sticking point. The Knicks can offer Martin the veteran’s minimum and nothing more or less. The dollar figure is a constant. Is contract length the sticking point? Does Martin believe he can make more money elsewhere, despite the fact that, for the second offseason in a row, he has zero offers? Is there something we don’t know about? Only time can tell, but right now, the fact that a useful player with a non-negotiable price tag remains in limbo with the team is slightly troubling and very confusing. Let’s hope for the sake of both parties that the Knicks and Martin can come to terms on a deal soon. Stay tuned.

The Departure of Chris Copeland: Why it Happened, What it Means for the Knicks, and NYKMemes’ Reaction

By Tommy Rothman

Image

Yesterday I tweeted “waiting for some Knicks news…” and went to grab some dinner. Of course, the basketball gods saw this as a great opportunity to punish me. When I grabbed my phone to check twitter after my meal, my mentions had exploded, with dozens of fans tweeting me to inform me that my favorite player, Chris Copeland, had left the Knicks. I thought this was a cruel prank, but when I saw the news being tweeted by NBA reporters, i felt the bottom drop out of my stomach. I had always known Chris might leave the Knicks, but did not think it would happen so quickly. Let’s take a look at why this happened, and what it means going forward.

Image

Why It Happened.

Copeland’s departure happened for 2 huge reasons. In order of importance, those 2 reasons are Mike Woodson and Money. Taking a look at the obvious, Chris Copeland received $3 million per year from the Pacers, which trumps the $1.7 Million we could offer him. But Copeland and his agent had both stated that he would be very open to taking a smaller deal to stay in New York. The main reason Copeland left is because Mike Woodson did not want him here. Woodson was infuriated by Copeland’s lack of polish on the defensive end, which is strange for a coach whose best player, Carmelo Anthony, plays very little defense. The Pacers sat Copeland down and showed him that they view him as a true asset, a player who can become something special in this league. Copeland had shown that every time he stepped on the floor during the season, but unlike Pacers coach Frank Vogel, Woodson neglected to see that. The Pacers made Copeland feel wanted. Copeland wanted to be a Knick. The Knicks showed limited interest in bringing him back, let alone making him a consistent part of their rotation. The Pacers pounced, and defeated us for the 2nd time in 3 months. Woodson let Copeland slip away.

What it means:

Is Copeland an amazing player? Of course not. He is a flawed individual, which is why he was a rookie last season despite being 28 years old. But Cope is a very talented scorer who can put the ball in the basket from anywhere on the court. He also improved his defense and rebounding as the year went on. So after letting such a talented player walk away, the Knicks are in trouble, right? Wrong. Copeland had a very small role on the team last year due to Woodson’s stubbornness, and therefore did not play a large role in the team’s success. This means that his departure will not have a large impact on the Knicks’ ability to repeat last season’s success. However, for those of you who always say that Cope is a bum and a bench player, It is worth knowing that Copeland ranked very high, higher than many established scorers, in “points per 36 minutes”, a stat which shows pure scoring ability regardless of playing time.

Reaction

On a more personal note…

Chris, you were a good player for the Knicks and you are also a very good person. You responded to the fans who reached out to you, something we rarely see from American athletes. You let me interview you in an online Q&A, you always showed appreciation for the fans who showed love for you, and you were always willing to discuss the game. You quickly became my favorite player, and it hurts to see you leave the team. What hurts even more is that it seems that you wanted to stay almost as badly as we wanted to keep you. But the Pacers could give you more money, and more importantly a bigger role, something you clearly deserved in New York but were denied by the coach. It hurts to see you leave, and I will be rooting for you all season, except for the four games during the season when we go up against your Pacers. And if the Pacers are unfortunate enough to run into us in the postseason (if we are healthy this time), I suppose I will be rooting against you for a week in May next year. But being able to communicate with a player on my favorite team was a great experience for me as I started this entire Knicks Comedy Blog, and I hope to continue being able to reach out to you for support even though you will be wearing a different uniform. As a player, you will always have our support, and are always welcome back in New York. Hey, it’s only a 2-year contract…

Once a Knick, Always a Knick. But if you want to get the ring you clearly deserve, you better get yourself and your dreadlocks back to NYC soon. The door is open. Never pass up an open shot.

Flight Cancelled: Knicks to Let Go of James White

Image

White missed this ambitious dunk in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest, as well as most of the shots he took during games. He will not be a Knick next season

The Knicks declined James White’s option on Saturday, according to sources. This means that the 30 year old guard will not be back with the team next season. White was signed for his defense and his explosive leaping ability, but struggled to produce and was a major disappointment in the dunk contest. White became a fan favorite in some ways due to his Youtube legacy and his interaction with fans (and haters) online (including yours truly), but did not bring much to the team from a basketball standpoint, which is why he will not be back next season. White will draw interest from a couple teams, but will likely sign with a team in China or Europe, where he can make more money and have a bigger role. -Tommy Rothman
