José Calderón out 2-3 weeks

New York Knicks Vs. Toronto Raptors pre-season

José Calderón is off to, as Clyde Frazier would say, an “auspicious start” as a Knick.

The Spanish PG, acquired in the Tyson Chandler trade, was a late scratch from Wednesday’s home opener, but an MRI Thursday revealed a calf strain, which will cost Calderón 2-3 weeks (at least… you never know with the Knicks). This is frustrating for Knicks fans; Calderón is an important player, he cost us our best interior defender (and our interior defense is looking suspect so far), and these kinds of injuries can be nagging. Hopefully Shane Larkin steps up in José’s absence, and Calderón can return before too long. -Tommy Rothman

Knicks trade Travis Outlaw to 76ers

tra

The Knicks have traded Travis Outlaw to the Philadelphia 76ers for Arnett Moultrie (who the Knicks released immediately after the trade). New York will also send over a 2019 2nd-round pick and the right to swap 2nd round picks in 2018. The trade makes room for Travis Wear on the Knicks’ NBA roster, and relieves New York of Outlaw’s $3 million salary while saving them another $4.7 million off of their luxury tax bill. The Sixers are expected to release Outlaw. -Tommy Rothman

Knicks sign DJ Mbenga

dj

The Knicks have signed center DJ Mbenga to compete for a roster spot, the team announced. THe 7’0, 255 pound, 33 year-old Mbenga won 2 championships under Knicks President Phil Jackson with the Lakers. He’ll be a long shot to make the team, but he provides and extra (big) body and brings knowledge of and experience in the triangle, which is presumably what Phil is looking for. -Tommy Rothman

James Dolan Actually, Seriously Wrote A Song About Trayvon Martin

jdl

Knicks Owner James Dolan likes to talk about his band, “JD and the Straight Shot,” whenever he gets a chance. In an interview with the NY Times this week, Dolan talked about how he has been spending less time with the Knicks and more time focusing on his band. He also mentioned that he made a song about the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, called “Under That Hood.” Dolan is polarizing to say the least, and, while there is seemingly no intent on his part to be offensive in any way, I’m not sure this will go over so well. You can listen to the song HERE.

Here are the lyrics:

Maybe his band will play the Anthem this season?
