Amar’e Stoudemire to work with Hakeem Olajuwon

Amar’e Stoudemire will resume working out with Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon for the second summer in a row, according to his training adviser Travis King.

King said the workouts will take place sometime in August at Olajuwon’s ranch outside Houston. It’s not clear if Tyson Chandler will join him, which was on the table in 2012.

Olajuwon has turned his full-court basketball gym into an NBA player development center during the summers, and he reportedly charges $50,000 a week for private instruction. He has worked one-on-one with Kobe BryantDwight Howard andLeBron James.

Stoudemire will continue to build on the post-up moves and defensive maneuvers he learned from Olajuwon last summer. The big reasons behind the collaboration were: (1) to give the Knicks a low-post presence, allowing Chandler to be the go-to pick-and-roller; and (2) to improve the spacing between Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, who had tended to crowd the court in the midrange area.

When Stoudemire returned from left knee debridement on New Year’s Day, he excelled on the block, averaging 14.2 points (on 57.7 percent shooting) and five rebounds in only 23 minutes per game. Two times he finished 100 percent from the field (7-for-7 and then 10-for-10).

Mike Woodson, who helped facilitate Stoudemire’s unique offseason training because of his friendship with Olajuwon from their Rockets playing days together, hasn’t determined if the power forward will start next season. Either way, the team envisions a big role for him.

“He’s a heck of a player,” GM Glen Grunwald said. “The question is his health and how much he can play. So we’ve got our medical staff and training staff working with him to design an offseason program that will get him to full health.

“We hope he’ll be able to play significant minutes for us next year. How much that will be, we don’t know at this time. But when he came and played for us … he was, as [Woodson] said, a big factor in those games.”

Reflecting on the Knicks’ Eastern Conference semifinals loss to the Pacers, Woodson said Stoudemire would have had a major impact if healthy, giving the Knicks a boost inside. In four games during the series — Stoudemire returned for Game 3 from right knee debridement — he averaged only eight minutes of playing time.

“STAT could have really helped us in that area because we had developed him over the summer to give us some low-post scoring,” Woodson said. “The fact that he just wasn’t up, I think, where we needed him to be based on his injuries, that kind of hurt us a little bit.”

Can the Knicks keep Pablo Prigioni? Check out his interview with Jared Zwerling

When Pablo Prigioni became the Knicks’ starting point guard on March 18, after the team lost four straight games, the team went on a 13-game winning streak. It was the best start for any rookie guard in NBA history, outdoing Danny Ainge who won 12 in a row with the Celtics in 1982.

While Prigioni and the Knicks are interested in teaming up together again to continue that kind of success, the Argentine will do his homework before potentially re-signing. He has other initial interest in the NBA and abroad, and he’ll weigh those different offers come free agency.

In a conversation with ESPNNewYork.com, Prigioni discussed his future, reflected on his first NBA season and shared some of his summer plans.

Would you like to return to the Knicks?

“Of course I would like to return. I really enjoyed this year. It was a great experience for me and my family. My first option is to play in NBA, but I’m open to hearing and watching my options. We will see.”

As you’re deciding where to play next season, what will be the most important factors for you and your family?

“The most important things for me to decide where I want to play is I feel that I can play and help the team, to feel that the team really wants me. On this professional level, the place where you go is always nice, and the people always take care of you and your family.”

How would you describe how your first season in the NBA went for you?

“It was much better than I could imagine. The first part of the season I used to learn everything about the league, my teammates, the NBA game, to adjust to the country, improve my English. I still speak terrible [laughs]. Also, to help my family and to discover the way how to play and help the team. And in the second part, I started to feel much better — my family, too. I had more confidence in my game and we really enjoyed the last part of the season together.”

What were your easiest adjustments, on and off the court, and biggest challenges?

“I think the easiest was to adjust to the NBA schedule and trips — playing three or four games a week. And the biggest challenges were to try to put myself in position to help the team, and show the coaching staff and my teammates that they can count on me in one minute or 20 minutes, and that I always will play 100 percent — no matter what.”

What do you think you guys were missing against the Pacers?

“I think the small details decided the playoffs, but we tried everything to win games. We lost home-court advantage in the first game of the series, and we couldn’t get a win in Indianapolis to bring home-court advantage back. Indiana played really well.”

Will you spend your summer in Alicante, Spain, where you have a home?

“I will mix my time between Argentina and Spain. That is the idea. I will rest a couple weeks and then start to work to come back stronger next year.”

How do you usually train in the offseason, and will you play with the Argentine national team?

“I used to run in the park near my house and work my body. I always play in the summer with the Argentina national team, but I haven’t decided if I will do that this year.”

Is there anything new this summer that you would like to try for the first time?

“I will have a basketball benefit camp in my town in Argentina to help the basketball schools and the young kids. It’s a first time I will do this in my town, and I’m so excited to be there.”

Carmelo Anthony was named to the All-NBA Second Team Thursday. Anthony led the league in scoring and finished third in the MVP voting, in which Melo was the only player other than LeBron James to garner a first-place vote. James and Kevin Durant finished ahead of Melo in both the MVP voting and the race to secure the two forward spots on the All-NBA First team.

J.R. Smith battled knee injury in postseason

Image

League sources revealed Thursday that Knicks sixth man J.R. Smith played through a knee injury during the postseason. Smith had fluid on his knee, which is the same ailment Carmelo Anthony suffered from in March. Anthony’s game was severely impacted by this injury, and it seems to have had a similar effect on Smith, who struggled mightily in the playoffs. Smith reportedly began complaining of the injury during the first-round series against the Celtics, in which he played well in the first couple games before getting ejected and suspended for elbowing Jason Terry, after which he was not the same for the rest of the postseason. Anthony’s problems went away immediately after he got his knee drained. Smith is considering getting the same procedure. It is hard to imagine why he did not do this earlier (especially during his suspension), and it is hard to imagine that he will be foolish enough to decline to get the knee drained now, with the Knicks facing a 5-month layoff.

Carmelo Anthony has torn labrum in left shoulder, may need Surgery

Image

Knicks’ superstar Carmelo Anthony learned Wednesday that he has a partial tear of the left labrum in his shoulder. Carmelo hurt his shoulder on April 14 and then injured it again in game 5 of the series against Boston. The Knicks hope Carmelo can avoid surgery and solve the issue with a month of rest. Surgery would likely set Anthony back 3 or 4 months.
