Can the Knicks keep Pablo Prigioni? Check out his interview with Jared Zwerling

Image

When Pablo Prigioni became the Knicks’ starting point guard on March 18, after the team lost four straight games, the team went on a 13-game winning streak. It was the best start for any rookie guard in NBA history, outdoing Danny Ainge who won 12 in a row with the Celtics in 1982.

While Prigioni and the Knicks are interested in teaming up together again to continue that kind of success, the Argentine will do his homework before potentially re-signing. He has other initial interest in the NBA and abroad, and he’ll weigh those different offers come free agency.

In a conversation with ESPNNewYork.com, Prigioni discussed his future, reflected on his first NBA season and shared some of his summer plans.

Would you like to return to the Knicks?

“Of course I would like to return. I really enjoyed this year. It was a great experience for me and my family. My first option is to play in NBA, but I’m open to hearing and watching my options. We will see.”

As you’re deciding where to play next season, what will be the most important factors for you and your family?

“The most important things for me to decide where I want to play is I feel that I can play and help the team, to feel that the team really wants me. On this professional level, the place where you go is always nice, and the people always take care of you and your family.”

How would you describe how your first season in the NBA went for you?

“It was much better than I could imagine. The first part of the season I used to learn everything about the league, my teammates, the NBA game, to adjust to the country, improve my English. I still speak terrible [laughs]. Also, to help my family and to discover the way how to play and help the team. And in the second part, I started to feel much better — my family, too. I had more confidence in my game and we really enjoyed the last part of the season together.”

What were your easiest adjustments, on and off the court, and biggest challenges?

“I think the easiest was to adjust to the NBA schedule and trips — playing three or four games a week. And the biggest challenges were to try to put myself in position to help the team, and show the coaching staff and my teammates that they can count on me in one minute or 20 minutes, and that I always will play 100 percent — no matter what.”

What do you think you guys were missing against the Pacers?

“I think the small details decided the playoffs, but we tried everything to win games. We lost home-court advantage in the first game of the series, and we couldn’t get a win in Indianapolis to bring home-court advantage back. Indiana played really well.”

Will you spend your summer in Alicante, Spain, where you have a home?

“I will mix my time between Argentina and Spain. That is the idea. I will rest a couple weeks and then start to work to come back stronger next year.”

How do you usually train in the offseason, and will you play with the Argentine national team?

“I used to run in the park near my house and work my body. I always play in the summer with the Argentina national team, but I haven’t decided if I will do that this year.”

Is there anything new this summer that you would like to try for the first time?

“I will have a basketball benefit camp in my town in Argentina to help the basketball schools and the young kids. It’s a first time I will do this in my town, and I’m so excited to be there.”

Carmelo Anthony named to All-NBA Second Team

Image

Carmelo Anthony was named to the All-NBA Second Team Thursday. Anthony led the league in scoring and finished third in the MVP voting, in which Melo was the only player other than LeBron James to garner a first-place vote. James and Kevin Durant finished ahead of Melo in both the MVP voting and the race to secure the two forward spots on the All-NBA First team.

J.R. Smith battled knee injury in postseason

Image

League sources revealed Thursday that Knicks sixth man J.R. Smith played through a knee injury during the postseason. Smith had fluid on his knee, which is the same ailment Carmelo Anthony suffered from in March. Anthony’s game was severely impacted by this injury, and it seems to have had a similar effect on Smith, who struggled mightily in the playoffs. Smith reportedly began complaining of the injury during the first-round series against the Celtics, in which he played well in the first couple games before getting ejected and suspended for elbowing Jason Terry, after which he was not the same for the rest of the postseason. Anthony’s problems went away immediately after he got his knee drained. Smith is considering getting the same procedure. It is hard to imagine why he did not do this earlier (especially during his suspension), and it is hard to imagine that he will be foolish enough to decline to get the knee drained now, with the Knicks facing a 5-month layoff.

Carmelo Anthony has torn labrum in left shoulder, may need Surgery

Image

Knicks’ superstar Carmelo Anthony learned Wednesday that he has a partial tear of the left labrum in his shoulder. Carmelo hurt his shoulder on April 14 and then injured it again in game 5 of the series against Boston. The Knicks hope Carmelo can avoid surgery and solve the issue with a month of rest. Surgery would likely set Anthony back 3 or 4 months.

Can the Knicks come back?

By Tommy Rothman

For the first time this season, the Knicks are playing a must-win game. A real must-win game. If the Knicks lose on Thursday, they won’t have another game until November, and only Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Steve Novak, Iman Shumpert, Amar’e Stoudemire, and Marcus Camby are locks to be on the roster next year. With so much on the line for now and so much in question for the future, Thursday’s game 5 is a game the Knicks must win at all costs. The same holds true for game 6 and game 7 (if necessary). 9 NBA teams have come back from a 3-1 deficit. Can the Knicks make it 10? Is New York still alive?

Here is my breakdown of game 5, game 6, and game 7.

NOTE: Obviously, my analysis for game 6 is based on the assumption that the Knicks have won game 5, and my analysis for game 7 is based on the fact that New York has also won game 6.

Game 5:

The first thing the Knicks need to do is win game 5 at home. The odds favor New York as the game will be played in the Garden, but as we learned in game 1, nothing is guaranteed. The Knicks must feed off of the crowd, hustle a bit more, and get a few more shots to fall in order to take care of business at home and keep their season alive. I give them about a 70% chance of winning this one.

Game 6:

Game 6 is where many expect the Knicks to meet their end. New York will have to beat Indy on the road, something they have not done all year. Indy is 4-0 at home in the playoffs, and the Knicks looked listless for part of game 3 and almost all of game 4 at the Fieldhouse. After winning game 5 (see NOTE), the Knicks will have some momentum and confidence, and will be playing with the knowledge that all they need is one win to force a game 7 in a packed Garden. At this point, the pressure will be on the Pacers. Indy is a young team that has been prone to blowing leads all year. At times, they have appeared easily rattled. Can the veteran Knicks capitalize on this? That will be the key. To win, of course, New York will need improved shot-making and a bit of an improvement on the glass. They can’t get sucked into the somewhat muted Indiana atmosphere and become completely listless like they did in game 4. I think the Knicks have a 35% chance of winning here.

Game 7:

After winning games 5 and 6 (see NOTE), the Knicks will have earned the right to host a winner-take-all game 7 at the Garden. All the pressure will be on Indiana. If it gets to a game 7, as long as the Knicks don’t get complacent after winning games 5 and 6 (which, it pains me to say, is possible based on our roster’s history), they should be able to take care of business in game 7. I’d give them an 80% chance of winning this game.

The Knicks are the better team, and their matchup with Indy isn’t too bad. If they can get back the home-court advantage they so foolishly squandered in game 1, they should be able to take the series. Game 5 seems like a very winnable game, but it will by no means be easy. The Knicks need to take care of business Thursday, then move on to game 6. Game 6 is where their season will most likely end, but if they can pull out a win there (and i think they can), then we will have the upper hand going into game 7. The Nets came back from 3-1 down to force a game 7. Why don’t we one-up them?
